Chapter Twenty-Three

“Have you readied the horses?” Drogo asked Hugh as they broke their fast the next dawn. He was feeling particularly restless to depart, despite the ordeal that awaited him today.

Across the table from him, the reason for his agitation put down her mug of cider.

“I did, my lord,” Hugh replied without a pause in consuming his cheese and bread.

“Which horses?” Isabel asked, glancing from Drogo to Hugh. “Why?”

Drogo almost rolled his eyes when Hugh sent him a “what should I say?” look.

“We are going to Bell’s Wood,” Drogo told her.

This brought her attention back his way in surprise.

“We, who?”

Blushing savagely, she couldn’t hold his gaze for long, but he could see the excitement in her eyes just the same. The same eyes that only the night before had darkened with desire at his mere touch. He’d brought her to truly wicked pleasure—pleasure forbidden outside the marriage bed.

Pleasure all the more outrageous because he hadn’t taken his own gratification, seeing only to hers.

She could be forgiven for blushing this morn.

“You and I,” he told her.

With that, her brows lifted. God help him, the memory of her experience the night before ghosted through her face as clearly as the gruel congealed in the bowl in front of him.

It had nearly killed him to postpone the second half of their lesson, the phase where he showed her how to bring a man to ecstasy. But after the utterly guileless way she’d reacted to what he did to her, after her wholehearted and protracted climax, all at his urging, he knew he couldn’t go through with it. Not then, when he was lost in her and frenzied with hunger for her. He would never have been able to play his role as instructor.

Nay, he would defer that lesson for a time when his body was calm and his wanting subsided.

That time was not this morn. Not yet. His body—or rather a certain part of his body—ached brutally from unfulfilled need.

He was risking his undoing taking her alone to the woods today, a roundtrip of half a day’s duration, but something inside him wanted badly to please her.

It was foolish and he knew it, this need to make her happy.

“Why?” she asked breathlessly.

“They need to see you, to know that you are hale and whole, before they will accept my aid.” ’Tis what he’d told himself, leastwise. “They accuse me of holding you against your will.” He held up a hand to stay her anticipated rebuttal. “And they need to see that you are here of your own volition to fight with me against their abuser.”

He paused to await her comments, but shockingly, she offered none.

“What’s more,” he added, “you’ve been asking very politely, and I don’t see the harm in it.”

Her blush intensified.

There. Giving her this small boon would prove how she could, indeed, gain what she wanted by using the agreeable conduct he’d shown her.

A gauzy couvrechef covered her head, held in place by a simple bronze circlet that glimmered in the candlelight.
